Avryx Caelumvolatus unguavis
|
Avryx are an avian dragon species with a wide range of sizes and colours. Similar to their bird cousins, they also have hollow bones. This makes them very lightweight letting them fly for great distances and achieve incredible aerial feats.
This species is almost completely covered in feathers of varying sizes. Their wings are comprised of a thin, stretchy and very dexterous membrane with tiny claws on the ends of the fingers. The coverts are covered in feathers. They have short sharp beaks with a row of razor sharp teeth inside, perfect for catching and tearing fish and other prey.
Avryx have a wide range of vocalizations. Similar to other birds species we hear today, they can emit chirps, screeches, growls, trills and other elaborate songs. Song is often a means to attract a mate. Today, song can be used in so many different ways, such as expressing feelings or singing for festivals.
Avryx have complex social groups. Some prefer to live in flocks. Some flocks have a leader with or without a council, others have a communal agreeance. Some prefer to live alone, or in pairs.
Avryx have rather flamboyant sexual lives. Some prefer the company of one partner for live. Many will form small groups of partners. Most tend to mate with a new partner or several new partners each season.

Unique Traits:
Avryx have hollow bones which enables them to fly with very little effort. Their flight can vary between long sessions of gliding and travel flight, to short and rapid bursts of agility and speed.
Diet:
Avryx are omnivores. They primarily enjoy fish and smaller meats, but they will indulge in fruits, vegetables, seeds and insects as well.
Reproduction:
Avryx build nests out of many differing materials, using a combination of twigs, bark, rocks, sand, leaves, fur and even feather. Some Avryx build nests in trees, others create nests on the ground or in burrows, and others dig elaborate tunnels to raise their young.
Both parents are involved in rearing their young. They often take turns hunting and watching the eggs and young.
Avryx reach sexual maturity at the ages of 4-6 years old. Avryx will look after their young for the first year or two before the young move out of the nest to find their own way.
The average lifespan of the Avryx is about 150 years.

History:
Birds have been prominent on Aquella for centuries. Many of the common bird species can still be found today. A group of birds living within the blast area of the radiation fields from the Great Nuclear survived the initial blasting and subsequent radiation poisoning. Over the years they changed and adapted to be larger and stronger than their bird cousins. Now, they are a dragon that is highly intelligent and resourceful.
